Jury Awards $80 Million To California Man After Getting Cancer From RoundUp
In a follow up to the story from last week, a federal jury in the Northern District of California has now awarded $80 million in damages to a man who was diagnosed with cancer after using popular weed killing product, RoundUp.
According to court documents, the jury awarded plaintiff Edwin Hardeman $5.27 million in compensatory damages and $75 million in punitive (punishment) damages.
This comes only eight days after the same jury found that RoundUp was a substantial factor in causing non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in Hardeman, who had regularly used RoundUp for his property beginning in the 1980s until his cancer diagnosis in 2015.
Monsanto, the parent company and manufacturer of RoundUp, has announced that they will appeal the decision.
This is the 2nd verdict reached by a court in awarding damages to plaintiffs who were diagnosed with cancer caused by RoundUp; to date, there are approximately 11,000 pending cases in various state and federal courts throughout the country.
Why Are People Suing RoundUp and Monsanto?
To be clear, Monsanto is a giant chemical company that manufacturers RoundUp and RangerPro, popular weed-killing products found in many stores today. Over the years there has been a pattern of consumers, especially those working in landscaping and farming, who have been diagnosed with cancer, specifically non-Hodgkin lymphoma, after having regular to frequent exposure to RoundUp and RangerPro. Studies have also shown that glyphosate, the active ingredient in RoundUp and RangerPro, has been linked to causing cancer in regular to frequent exposure.
RoundUp and RangerPro users who have been diagnosed with cancer are suing Monsanto for negligently exposing them to a product that Monsanto either knew or should have known caused cancer.
