Keep reading for your full Hurricane Beryl update in Houston.

Hurricane Beryl 2024

Hurricane Beryl initially formed as a Category 5 hurricane, which is unusually strong for an early-season tropical storm. By the time the hurricane hit Houston, it was downgraded to a Category 1. Even so, it caused major destruction.

Hurricane Beryl wiped out 80% of the city’s electricity powered by CenterPoint Energy, including power to 2.2 million businesses, homes, and schools.

Hurricane Beryl killed 22 people in the Houston area. Many of these deaths occurred from heat stroke due to power outages. Power stayed out for hundreds of thousands for around a week following the storm. As of mid-October, three months following the storm, some residents of Houston are still without power due to leaning utility poles.

After the storm, the American Red Cross offered relief supplies and disaster workers to support those without power and help with cleanup and recovery efforts. In the following weeks, Houston had multiple emergency shelters for those who lost their homes. The IRS announced a tax relief program for Hurricane Beryl victims in Texas with some fees waived.

Lingering Hazards From the Storm

If you’re looking for a Hurricane Beryl update in Houston, you likely already know that the city is still facing lingering concerns about the storm.

For example, according to nearby residents, CenterPoint Energy installed a utility pole in one neighborhood prior to the storm and may not have secured it properly. After the storm, the residents found that the pole was leaning concerningly toward their homes and that the power was out. The power has been out for three months, and CenterPoint Energy has not responded appropriately.

This type of issue raises many safety concerns. The people of Houston are still facing hazards like power issues, a lack of supplies, property damage, and more.
