The North Carolina Department of Safety has reported record property damage caused by Hurricane Matthew, which made land-fall in the south-eastern US last week, north of $1.5 billion dollars.
More than 33,000 applicants have applied for assistance from FEMA, with $12 million having been approved at the time of this writing. Officials remain certain that the number of applicants will continue to climb as surveying of the storm damage continues throughout the coming weeks.
The death toll in North Carolina has risen to 26 which makes up the majority of the 46 deaths reported overall in the US. Again, those numbers are also expected to rise as more damage is cleared, and more water has receded from this year’s deadliest storm.
Hurricane Matthew officially made landfall on US Soil, coasting by Florida on October 7th and reaching the Carolinas the next day. Early estimates suggest that the total amount of property damage between the 8 countries who were in Matthew’s path is between $6.7 to $8.7 billion, ranking Matthew the 17th costliest hurricane in modern history.
