Thanks to a new federal law, all hospitals are required to post prices for their standard services. The new Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) law, which took effect January 1st, 2019, requires hospitals to make public a list of standard charges via the internet.
So, as of today, every hospital in the country is required by law to list charges for every single one of their services. As stated on the proposed rule changes for 2019, the reason for this change was in response to a great public concern “that challenges continue to exist for (hospital) patients due to insufficient price transparency.”
While that explanation for the change in the law is refreshing, the reality is that hospitals are now legally obligated to post their grossly-inflated charges and after a few minutes of digging into their newly released data, some of the charges are even more absurd than you could imagine.
Headaches – $44,187.28
Cesarean Section – $43,289.22
Chest Pain – $35,276.43
Vitamin B-2 – $626.00

Texas Hospitals Abusing The Texas Hospital Lien Laws
If you’ve ever been in a car accident, it’s likely that you were treated in an emergency room and if your injuries were serious enough, a doctor wrote an order for you to be admitted into the hospital. Once you were out of their care, somewhere between you, your car insurance, your health insurance, and the hospital, there’s a wildly outrageous hospital bill that needs to be paid.
That’s where something called a “hospital lien” comes in handy for hospitals; it’s essentially a legal document that allows the hospital to stake a claim on any settlement you may receive from your car accident lawsuit to make sure the hospital bill is paid.
Seems straightforward and fair enough right?
Texas hospital lien laws allow hospitals to do this ONLY if the patient has been admitted into the hospital within 72 hours. The problem is that most hospitals are actually ignoring the law and filing hospital liens on EVERYBODY who steps into the emergency room regardless of whether or not they were even admitted into the hospital.
The reason why this is a terrible practice is that hospital liens will negatively impact your credit score to the point where you may pay higher interest rates or even be denied loans to buy a home or finance a car.
Even worse, Texas hospitals are filing hospital liens for crazy, exuberant amounts. Imagine how much your credit score could suffer from having a $70,000 hospital lien over your head.
