Gov. Greg Abbott Declares A “State of Disaster” for Hidalgo, Cameron, and Willacy Co. After Major Flooding

Most major cities in the Rio Grande Valley are reeling from flood waters after nearly a foot of rain poured down on the area.

On Thursday, Gov. Greg Abbott declared a “State of Disaster” for Hidalgo, Cameron, and Willacy Counties, along with San Patricio and Nueces, directing that relief resources be allocated to help cope with the disaster.

Parts of McAllen, Weslaco, Harlingen, and Mission were virtually underwater as rescue workers tended to those unable to safely evacuate their homes as the water levels began to rise during Tuesday and Wednesday’s torrential downpour. Homes and businesses alike across the Rio Grande Valley saw floodwaters steadily creep inside until the rain ceased.

If your home was damaged by flood waters, here’s what you should do:

If You Have Flood Insurance, You MUST File Your Flood Damage Claim Immediately

There is absolutely no sense in waiting to notify your insurance carrier that your home has been through a flood. Acting to start your claim quickly can help reduce the amount of time it may take to receive the funds necessary to fix your home. Not filing your claim immediately is one of the biggest mistakes many homeowners make that can kill their storm damage claims.

Take Lots of Pictures

Your smartphone has a camera, so use it and take lots of pictures to ensure that the adjuster gets the full scope as to what happened to your home.

Check FEMA Regularly For Any Relief Aid Updates

At the time of this writing, it is unclear when and if FEMA relief aid will be available to the Rio Grande Valley, however, it is a best practice to check FEMA’s website periodically for any potential relief aid you may be eligible to receive.
